my wife is pregnant can she drive??

Postby bigluke777 on Tue Dec 19, 2006 7:19 pm

My wife and I want to drive as a team. She is 6 wks pregnant and I have heard that driving could cause a possible miscariage. I was also wondering what would happen if we did drive for a company and they found out she was pregnant? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope that it will be fine because we can make a lot more money as a team than I would be able to by myself.

How are you going to team with a new born? Trucking is hard on the homelife when one parent is on the road. That baby is going to need mama at home.

Federal regulation prohibits infants from riding in commercial vehicles. Child must be at least 12 years old and on break from school.

Didn't mean to bust your bubble driver.

Condoms the ultimate solution. I'm sure you don't want to tell your son he was born in the back of a truck.

My wife is pregnant and only 6wks along!! The baby is not born yet nor will it be for 8 more months. Condoms won't help because she is already pregnant!! My wife is going to stop trucking and stay home before and after the baby is born so I highly doubt it will be born in the sleeper, and once it is born there is no way it will be in the truck with us. does anyone know if its ok for her to drive while she is pregnant?? I know she can't drive once its born... duh!!

From your first post you said your wife was pregnant and you wanted to team. You said you could make more teaming than running solo. What were we suppose to think? You made it sound like you were making some long term plans. It would be rough on your wife. Trucking is stressful and it is not something you would want to expose a pregnant woman to. If she would have to go to school and go out with a trainer, by the time she was ready to team with you she might make 2 deliveries in the first stop. The freight and the child.

Duh...What would be stopping her from driving after the child is born? All she would need to do is find someone to watch the kid while she was working.

I thought you wanted to know if she could drive while pregnant. We are just a bunch of truck drivers, so I would think we are not the best source to answer your question.

Your question would be better directed towards her doctor. I suppose he would be the best person to evaluate the job, her condition and make an intelligent choice as to whether or not the rigors of cross-country driving would make the child retarded or have some other adverse effect derived from trucking.

The condom was a statement of hindsight. However, if making babies was a priority in your life, I am happy for your success. If not, a condom would have saved a lot of headache.

I have not asked the doctor yet, although we should. I just figured some team out there had to have something similar happen to them otr and may be able to help. We are both done with school and looking for a good company to team for a little bit, then I will drive solo. Anybody have a recomondation for a good company to start out with? Were thinking of driving for covanent but I've heard some bad things about them. Thanks for the help. [/quote]

I dont see the problem in driving but keep in mind there will be a lot of climbing in and out of the cab, its not like getting into a car.
Too, do you plan on having her do anything more than just drive? There may be a time when the tandems need to be adjusted. Trailer hookups. I dont think youd make her open the hood to do a pretrip or check the fluids, heck, I cant even open it, it takes more weight than I have, to do so! (The only way I've been able to do so is lift it from behind the fenderwell, using my shoulders, it loks funny to see someone do that but it has to be done!).
Do you really want a live-in nanny to bring up that baby?

Jimdale

Check 49 CFR Part 392.60. I know its codified more speciffically elsewhere in the regs. I'll see if I can remember where and get back to you.

392.60 is general but clear about unauthorized passangers in commercial vehicles.

All drivers must take a physical to get a driving job. How would the company not know she is pregnant especially on a new hire?

Employers are not supposed to ask medical questions before an offer of employment is made. However, this is conditional and depends on what the doctor says after the physical is completed. Generally, an applicant can't be denied employment based on pregnancy.

She is only 6 wks pregnant she will not start to show untill 6 more weeks and by that time the physical will be long over with. You can not hear the babys heart beat with a stethascope untill after 12 weeks. She just took a physical for the driving acadamy and the doctor had no idea. I agree with most of what you guys are saying its not the best life for a pregnant woman, but i really do not think it will be that bad untill she is 7-9 nine months pregnant. Financially it makes sense to drive as a team, but like i said before once the baby is born there is no way i want her to leave the baby with some nanny and come with me. I will either drive solo or try to get another job maybee as a dispatcher or recruiter or something similar. If its true that we can make 100k in a year i will have plenty of money when the babys born because i can live here in alabama for next to nothing. I appreciate you guy's help i know your just drivers not doctors but its good to hear it from people that are actually on the road...not some doctor who has never even been in an 18 wheeler.

The doctor that did the physical for driving school is probably some paid idiot that pushes everyone he can through the system. Schools want to make money selling their training and as such they have a lower standard, you are not their employee so they have no risks.

When you go to an employer’s doctor, it's a whole different story. Now you are an employee and a carrier is going to check you out pretty good to protect themselves. The urine test that they use to check blood sugar and the specimen used for controlled substance will more than likely show the pregnancy.

Try this ask your perspective employer if they have a policy about pregnant drivers. If so, will they give you a copy of that policy? If they ask a bunch of questions tell them you are just exploring your options. Don’t have to tell them the wife is pregnant. Different carriers have different medical standards that each require. Some are tougher than others.

Let us know how it turns out.

Probably it's okay that she does some driving now but not too long. Since driving a truck can be very stressful and physically challenging, she should stop going on the road with you soon. It will minimize the danger of a miscarriage and it's just not right that a pregnant woman does a very hard job.

Our son had the ABC's and 1 - 50 down by 2 years of age; when he was born I would hum sing-song rythm's to him and as he got older he seemed to remember them and apply them; "....abc...song, etc.."

Also I notice children first want to know "what" something is before "how" something is; a car if first "car" and then "red car", shape and form are recognized before comparison to other cars and then "red" becomes a way to distinguish one care from another.
