Should we strike?

Postby forum moderator on Thu Apr 03, 2008 1:14 pm

We've all seen the news. And at risk of losing support from advertisers I would like to say that I 100% support the independent truckers in the idea of a strike. As unions dissolve and business move's jobs for profits over people, it seems our chance to make change is quickly slipping away from us. At a time when we're most "connected" by technology that same technology disconnects us from each; technology that allows us to spread a message of change can also be used to dilute that message from a roar into a whimper.

We know we need change, but it's just to hard to make it happen.

But these men are doing it, losing money and contracts in the process. Sitting in a truck while the cell phone is shaking from dispatch, their wife and the bank. But even if it was just for one day it showed us something important, that a small group can still shake up big business.....at it's time to get things rocking.

I'm not saying we all have to park our cars and trucks, but maybe if we stopped being quiet about what we see around us. We're all frustrated and we want more.

The thing that grabs me is the Mexican immigrants were able to pull together last May and look at the difference they made.

What is it going to take to get drivers to do the same? When will they learn that if we don't fight together than we stand to loose what is left of our livelihoods. Just because your a company driver you can't walk around in fear. Drivers are as much needed as the truck so your not going to be out a job. Or is it because you earn so little that you can't afford to stop, that's all the more reason to park the truck for a few days.

Driver need to wise up a bit before NAFTA takes your job and hands it to someone else.

WEll, that is an interesting question. I hope that it builds from the small groups because many smaller companies are going to fold as well... Not just the owner ops. I sold my truck almost a year ago otherwise I would be with my fellow drivers on the side here in PA.
I know the load is late but the voices kept telling me to stop and clean the guns.

That's the master plan get rid of the independents which is the only group standing in the way of NAFTA.

Reminds me of the farmers strikes. When Green Giant went out of the midwest in favor of over-seas green beans and Ertl ("The All-American toy company - made in USA is not just our motto, it's our business AND our country") went to Mexico, the other 'dominos' were going down next. The other day, I heard Mexico still thinks 4 or 5 of our western states should be theirs because the Rio Grande was not the real boundary??? I'm fully aware of historical view differences but I hadn't heard that one. What amazes me most is there is NO news in this country, you have to log on to foreign newspapers to know what's happening HERE, like Nissan to enter the commercial truck business here, our politics, most everything. Fox, CNN, MSNBC all have the same days-old stories on over and over and over and the exact same stories are timed to air at the same time so no matter which station you turn on, it's the same blah, blah, blah. It was on the net that the IMF (international monetary fund) says we ARE in a recession. Wow, they can admit what our newscasters won't. Individual Mexican people will tell you how many of them hate NAFTA (and US) because they feel our companies dump all their toxic waste in Mexico because of our conservation laws and they have a "right" to work here because of it.

What Paul wrote on another thread is so true and so hard to remember: the recession WILL turn around, one way or the other; the hard part is not giving in to defeatism, "yeah, but what can I/you do about it?" Who do you buy from?

note: by no news, I mean time-fillers like movie stars sexcapades and their pathetic woes as major network media. What the heck happened to journalism? The 3 minutes about the truckers strike didn't address any on-going or long-term issues.

I am retired military and I have been a part of the "machine". I have also been to many European, Asian, and South American countries in my 20 years of service. First of all, there is no other country I would prefer to live in. Next, the government has taken nothing from us. We have wrapped it up, put a bow on it and handed it to them on a silver plater. We as an American nation have chosen not to exercise the rights given to us by the "Bill of Rights" and the Constitution. The standard of conduct for the American people is to bitch, moan and complain everytime something happens and leave it at that. We have let the "Parties" become controlled and funded by the special interest groups to the point where our representatives, at all levels of government, don't care what the common man and woman think or want. I forseee in my lifetime (I'm 43) that there is going to be some form of, for lack of a better work, revolution.

Until we drivers come together as a whole, independant, leasee and company drivers, and make a stand, we will continue to be puppets on a sting. Until we let the people, companies and brokers know that we will not be casually screwed and down right bent over and Fu***d. It will continue to happen. They need to feel the collar that we have around our necks, the whips we have at our backs and the tight grip that we have on our balls. Until they feel the importance of not being able to move, consume and sell the products that we deliver and ship. They will never care. Final words "Hell yes we need to strike".

Together we stand, divided we fall.

Over a year, and still no action on a strike.

Is this business like herding cats or what?
